THE FIRST VISIT
We
welcome you into the treatment area for your child's initial examination.
This gives you and your child an opportunity to become comfortable
as well as to meet our pediatric dentists and staff. At this
visit, the emphasis is on oral hygiene techniques, proper nutrition
and cavity prevention. Your child's teeth will not usually be cleaned
or dental treatment performed at this appointment. This allows us
time to answer your questions and discuss dental concerns that are
important to you. Dr. Gina or Dr. Gail will perform
a comprehensive head and neck examination. Dental radiographs
(x-rays) will be taken only if the doctor feels they are necessary
to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning. Your child's assessment
will also include the recognition of any possible bite problems
and a plan for correction. Our goal is to teach you and your child
good oral habits that will help keep your child's smile beautiful
for a lifetime.
WHAT IS A PEDIATRIC DENTIST?
A
pediatric dentist is the dental equivalent to a pediatrician. Both
specialists begin to see children at a young age to evaluate health,
educate parents, and intervene early before problems arise. Like
the pediatrician, the pediatric dentist is trained to treat children
from infancy through adolescence. He or she has extra years
of residency in specialized pediatric training after the required
four years of dental school. By establishing your child’s
dentist early, your child will already have a good dental home if
an emergency or accident arises. Early dental care of those new
teeth prevents childhood dental decay (still prevalent in many children).
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children
have their first dental visit by their first birthday.
